"33 Books" at the Zurich Summer School of Slavic Studies

The 2nd Summer School of the Slavic Department of the University of Zurich was dedicated to the topic of "Migration and Multilingualism" and dealt with a whole range of exciting and highly topical subjects such as the connection between language and identity, silencing and exophonies or Slavic languages in German-language rap. The workshop "Buchexil und Tamvydat", hosted by Sylvia Sasse and Iryna Herasimovich on September 12, focused on migrating books and Belarusian as a language of resistance against imperial power and political violence. After an introduction to the history of book publication in Belarusian, which is actually a centuries-long history of bans and new beginnings, and a discussion about the pressure currently being exerted on the cultural scene and the Belarusian language in Belarus, the two initiators presented the project "33 Books for Another Belarus" and, together with the participants of the summer school, outlined possible development paths for the project.
